On Dec. 31, Byron will have a new Olmsted County Sheriff's deputy specifically assigned to patrol the area.

Brandon Bornhorst, 31, of Pine Island, will take over for deputy Greg Wood, who has completed his four-year assignment. Wood will go back to general patrol in the county.

The position usually rotates every three or four years, said Wood, who lives in the country outside of Byron.

"If I had to pick a town to live in, I'd live in Byron," he said.

Wood added that what makes the community nice is that neighbors often get together to socialize, which makes it easy to expand a neighborhood watch program, something he did over his tenure.

Bornhorst has been a deputy for the past six years with the county, and said he is looking forward to focusing on one place instead of moving around to various locations.

"It's more single purpose," he said. "Instead of being all over the county, you have he opportunity to work with the community."
