Another year, another Med City Marathon
Popular event begins in Byron May 25

By David Richards

The countdown is on.

In a little less than two weeks, thousands of athletes will once again take part in the Med City Marathon and other events, which for nearly two decades have become a regional staple.

"We were part of the Rochester track club, and we had just run the Twin Cities Marathon in 1993," said Wally Arnold before last year's race. "We had a good time and thought Rochester should have one."

Arnold first organized the Med City Marathon in 1995 with his wife Peg.

For 2014, race weekend begins Friday, May 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. with Med City Kids' Marathon registration and t-shirt pickup at A Child's Kingdom, 1621 North Broadway in Rochester.

On Saturday, May 24, race packet pick-up will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the Med City Kids' Marathon at 11 a.m. and the Diaper/Dash and Toddler Trot at noon.

The mascot races follow that at 1 p.m., with the 5K run/walk will be held at 3 p.m.

The big races kick off Sunday, May 25 in Byron.

"It's kind of nice that we can start some place and run on roads and into town and then get runners out onto the trails," Wally Arnold said last year.

From 5:30 to 6:45 a.m., race day packets can be picked up at Byron Elementary School. The Med City Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay and 20 Mile begin at 7 a.m., with the finish line at Mayo Civic Center.

A Kids Play Zone will also be held on both days, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The date for the kids packet pickup is wrong. They pick up their packets on THURSDAY MAY 22 from 4 to 7 at A Child's Kingdom. The t-shirts are an option for the kids and there is a cost associated with it.
