On Wednesday, July 17, in conjunction with Byron's Good Neighbor Days, Support Our Soldiers and the Byron American Legion Auxiliary will host a "Field of Flags" at 1128 Fourth St. NW, the same location as the annual Fun in the Sun Classic Car Show held that same weekend.
"They're beautiful," said Kim McPhee, president of the Byron American Legion Auxiliary, of all the flags. "We went to Mazeppa's last year. "It's just a really neat ceremony to honor our military."
The 3 x 5 flags stand 8 feet, in perfect rows and columns, across a field of green, with each one representing a living or deceased military veteran or active military personnel. Mazeppa's event last year honored 377 soldiers, and visitors will be able to walk among the flags, reading dedications and reflecting upon personal heroes.
"It really is a nice way to honor the military, and it's not political," McPhee said.
The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. July 17, with the flags being lit and available for viewing around the clock until Saturday morning.
Jeff Kasten, who runs the car show, will be providing the lighting and security for the event at no cost.
The cost to dedicate a flag is $10. For more information, contact McPhee at (507) 775-6272.
In addition to the "Field of Flags," Byron's Good Neighbor Days won't have a shortage of music. Planned Wednesday, July 17, through Sunday, July 21, three concerts will be held over the course of the event.
On Friday, July 19, from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Bears Den, "Break Even," will perform. The band plays a wide variety of rock music from the 60s to modern hits.
Also performing July 19 will be "Pop Rocks," taking the stage at Byron Lanes from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. "Pop Rocks" plays everything from dance party hits to 80s rock, throwback hip hop and various classics.
On Saturday, July 20 at the firehall, "SideFx" will headline the fireman's dance from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The band's set list can range Metallica to Green Day to Cheap Trick.
