Tornado Scam: Beware of Automated Phone Call Claiming to be The Salvation Army

Tornado Scam: Beware of Automated Phone Call Claiming to be The Salvation Army

Roseville, MN - The Salvation Army has received information about a scam in which an automated phone call claiming to originate from The Salvation Army and American Red Cross is soliciting funds for Oklahoma tornado relief.

From The Salvation Army's National Headquarters:

We received word about a robo-call from an organization (no name given) mounting an emergency appeal for funds for tornado disaster relief in Oklahoma. The pitch included specific reference to American Red Cross and Salvation Army, with text along the lines of "The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army are on site working, and we need more funds to keep help coming." There was an option to press 1 to donate. The call came from phone number 888-981-6499.

The Salvation Army Northern Division, which serves Minnesota and North Dakota, does not solicit funds via telephone. If you receive the call mentioned above, hang up.

Here are three safe ways to donate to The Salvation Army's Oklahoma tornado relief efforts:

Give online at SalvationArmyNorth.org or call 800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769)

Text "STORM" to 80888 to make a $10 donation via your mobile phone. To confirm your gift, respond "Yes."

Mail a check to The Salvation Army, 2445 Prior Ave. N., Roseville, MN 55113. Designate your gift "Oklahoma Tornado."
