Deb Wilk expects to miss Hayfield, "a very nice community" and the friends she has made here as she becomes a retiree after teaching in the land of the Vikings for 34 years.
She grew up in Winona and went to Winona High School and Winona State University.
"I came to Hayfield to teach right out of college," she said, looking around her classroom filled with fifth graders. "I especially liked and will miss this very nice community, the friends I've made and the students, but I won't miss correcting papers."
She plans to move back to Winona because she has family there.
"I plan to volunteer at school and at church," she said.
She added that her mother had a deep respect for teachers and never stopped telling her that she would be a teacher.
"And if I had it to do over, I would do the same," she said. "I am a single person, so I could have changed, but I wouldn't have."
She said she has done some traveling and probably will do some more.
