When Derek Severson's dad told him that if he fixed a car that had a blown-out transmission it, he could have it, he began "wrenching."
"I was fourteen when he told me that, so I've been working on cars just about half my life," he explained. In high school, he would often help his friends fix their vehicles.
Severson, a 2007 graduate of Hayfield High School and a 2009 graduate of the RCTC Mechanic Program, began working at Kasson Auto Repair on Monday, August 5. Before coming to Kasson, he had worked at two mechanic shops in Rochester.
"It's nice being closer to home," he said. "And I like being in a smaller shop; one of the shops I worked at was big, and it just wasn't as much fun." He added he enjoys the laid back atmosphere of working in smaller repair shops and getting to talk to the customers.
Severson was the first in his graduating class to become ASE certified. "I began working full-time at a mechanic shop when I was in my first year of college," he explained. "It takes two years of experience before you can become certified, so I was able to be certified pretty much about the same time I graduated from college, so that was nice." Severson has experience working on both domestic and foreign manufactured vehicles, and has experience doing both transmission and motor repairs.
Owner of Kasson Auto Repair, Tim Omarro is happy to have Severson running the repair shop portion of his business. "I've known Derek for a while and when I heard he was looking for a job, it was perfect timing because our mechanic that was here had decided to leave," he explained.
"Derek brings a great work ethic and a lot of knowledge of domestic and foreign cars." Omarro said Severson also brought in diagnostic testing tools that work on foreign cars so their shop will be able to do a lot more repairs. "He (Severeson) keeps up on all the latest technology that comes out in vehicles and that's something that will be a great asset to our customers, he is very knowledgeable."
Along with the repair service, Omarro also runs T&K towing which offers 24 hours towing services. "We also have our phones on, a lot of time customers call just with questions and that's just fine with us."
