Blaze destroys garage
By David Richards
A garage fire that broke out in Salem township last week caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, fire officials said.
A neighbor reported the blaze just after midnight March 11. It was located a half mile west of Salem town hall.
Everything in the garage was destroyed, said Jeff Thorpe, Byron fire chief, including two every day cars and a collector 1973 El Camino. A fourth car, parked outside the garage, was also destroyed, along with various shop tools inside the building.
Thorpe said the residence next to the garage sustained minor heat damage but was still livable.
Byron Fire responded on scene with the chief's vehicle, a pumper and two tankers because townships do not have fire hydrants. A ladder truck was dispatched as backup. The blaze is the largest structure fire in the Byron area so far this year. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause.
