As the sirens from the fire truck headed down the main drag of Hayfield, Kalli Jo Klocke rode in the fire truck proudly as she headed off the to the State Track and Field Meet at Hamline University on Saturday, June 9, to compete in the pole vault.
Kallie Jo represented Hayfield High School and her community proudly by not only placing third out of 17 competitors, but also breaking the school pole vault record not once, but twice!
Last year she set the school pole vault record at 9-04. This season she has continued to raise the bar from 9-06, to 10, to 10-03, and then onto vaulting 10-06 and 10-09 at the state meet.
We definitely knew going into this meet that she was totally capable of setting another record. All spring she was determined to end her high school track and field career strong. She has been putting in many, many hours working on drills and aiming to get that crossbar as high as possible.
With the poor weather at the state meet, the Class A pole vault was moved indoors into the fieldhouse. This was okay with everyone and helped Kalli Jo clear 8-06, 9-00, 9-06, and 10-00 on her first attempt. Going for the new school record of 10-06, she missed on her first attempt but was thrilled on her second jump clearing the bar and knowing it was another record broken! It was a great confidence booster too.
Then the bar raised by three inches to 10-09 with five competitors remaining. Kallie Jo ended up clearing the bar on her first attempt and her face was priceless. She couldn't believe it and her fans went wild!
The bar next rose to 11-00 with Jo and two other girls remaining. Rachel TerHaar from Concordia Academy cleared it on her first attempt, and then Ashley Hokanson from Perham cleared it on her second attempt. The pressure was then on more.
Unfortunately she just barely missed the bar. She was still all smiles knowing what she just accomplished.
Placing third at the state meet is definitely something to be proud of. Her big group of fans from coaches, to family, friends, neighbors, and administration were also beyond thrilled for her. Hokanson won it with a height of 11-07 and TerHaar second with a height of 11-00.
We want to thank everyone for making the trip to Hamline to support Kalli Jo Klocke in her successful trip to State.
Way to go Jo and thanks for a great track and field season! We are going to miss you on the team next year and wish you all the best in the future. Thank you also for being a role model for future vaulters!
