Girls race to third place

By Tom O'Leary

The Byron Girls Cross Country team battled hard last Tuesday to land a 3rd place finish at the Byron Invitational. The competition was strong and Byron took the challenge, with several runners finding themselves improving greatly from our previous scrimmage on this true cross country course.

The team was led by Rebecca Houston who finished 3rd place overall at 18:36 in the 4K event.

Teammate Haley Abrahms worked up to the award stand with a 7th place finish in 19 minutes flat. Lakin Koski fought her way to a 14th place finish at 19:53. Newcomer Maddie Ford continues to grow in the sport with a 20:27. Emily Luther filled the Bears 5th slot with a strong 21:43. Regina Burroughs contributed nicely with a 22:36 and rounding out the varsity squad was Megan O'Leary with a 23:33.

"This was a great race for our girls", said Coach O'Leary, "They got to see what Kasson-Mantorville brings to the conference, as well as being able to close the gap a bit on the team from Stewartville. Our girls are competing well."

The JV squad was a bit light in numbers, yet ran very well as competitors. Siobhan Chantigan landed a medal with a 6th place finish in 24:07 and teammate Lainy Borchert battled for a very strong 28:10.

The Junior High girls raced to a Championship with excellent performances by all seven runners. Nyombia Smith continues to lead this squad with a 12:01 in the 1.5 mile race, her time landed her a 4th place finish overall. Abbi Barstad was right with her in 5th place at 12:23. Kristina Krook hit the award stand with a 7th place finish in 12:58.

On her heels was a strong runner in Isabelle Gartner at 13:08. Maddy Nichols worked for a nice 13:21, followed by great efforts from Katie Carpenter and Gracie Morris at 14:41 and 14:44 respectively.

"The Jr High girls continue to impress us," said Coach O'Leary, "they come out focused and compete at each and every meet, it's fun to watch them grow into the sport."

Prior to awards the seniors were recognized along with their parents. Thanks to seniors Layla Khalili and Lainy Borchert for their contributions as valuable members of this team.

Make it a great senior year.
