The Cobras picked up their first win of the season, beating Randolph 55-53 in exciting fashion in the second round game of the Randolph Holiday Tournament on December 28.
With ten seconds left and the game tied 53 all, the Cobras got a steal from Katy Erdmann, who passed to Haley Staffon for a lay-up for the winning basket.
The Cobras had lost 57-53 to Grand Meadow in Thursday's first round game.
Sophomore Piper Yankowiak was selected to the All Tournament team for her performance in the two games. She averaged 10 points and six rebounds in the two game tournament.
"What a great win for our team, especially after coming up short the night before," Coach Brennen Rath said. "We really had a lot of girls step up and play their hearts out. Any time we can get four or five girls to score around 10 points, we think we have a good chance of winning. Emily Weber really played a spirited game and led the charge in the first half. Emily Hodgman played every second of the second half and battled inside all night."
Rath added that he was really happy with how the girls stayed positive and really came together as a team.
"It was nice to get that first win out of the way," he said. "They definitely deserved it!!"
The leading scorer In the win was Emily Weber with 13 points, followed by Haley Staffon with 11; Piper Yankowiak, 10; Emily Hodgman, 9; Katie Blaisdell, 6; McKenzie Standiger, 4 and Katy Erdmann, 2.
Randolph led at the half 29-25. Triton was 11-21 from the free throw line and Randolph, 14-30. Weber hit two three-point baskets for Triton and Randolph made one.
The Triton girls will travel to Lake City on January 4 and to Leroy-Ostrander on January 7. Their next home game is scheduled for January 8 against Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
