Both Byron wrestlers held their own during the Class AA state wrestling tournament March 1-2 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
At 182 pounds, Brian Bertram finished the tournament in third place, falling only to eventual state champion Jamison Evans of Grand Rapids by a score of 10-3. Evans finished the season 44-0. Bertram ended with a 44-8 mark for the year and went 5-1 in the tournament. He won his opening match by a score of 9-3, and after the Evans duel, he won his next four matches. In the third place match, he defeated Tyler Midas of Foley by pin. Midas was 36-9 coming into the state tournament.
"I'm very proud of how Brian wrestled," head coach Ryan Radke said. "At the start of the season, his goal was to go to state, and when he won sections, we said we needed new goals of placing but needed to take it one match at a time and that's what he did. He stayed focused and wrestled his best at the right time."
At 145 pounds, Brett Bradford finished 1-2 at the tournament and finished the year 39-9. In this opening match, Bradford drew Drey Loge of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus, who entered the competition with an overall mark at 42-3 and who eventually placed fourth. Loge outlasted Bradford 2-0.
In the wrestlebacks, Bradford defeated Eric Madson of Hutchinson 7-0, before falling to the eventual third place wrestler, Jordan Hanan of Annandale/Maple Lake.
