Bryon football players start season 2-0
Defense shines in win at Cannon Falls

By David Richards

Chalk up another win for Byron.

The Bears, who improved to 2-0, forced seven turnovers on their way to a 27-15 win at Cannon Falls Friday, Sept. 6.

They host Plainview-Elgin-Millville Friday at 7 p.m. for their home opener.

"We were hoping we could be 2-0," head coach John Austinson said. "We have some tough competition coming up. We were actually able to get there. Now our goal is to be 1-0 every week from here on out."

Byron's defense forced five interceptions and recovered a pair of fumbles.

Dan Fujan, who rushed for 19 carries, 104 yards and a score, intercepted two passes and made one fumble recovery.

Isaac Jestus grabbed the other fumble, while Michael Carl, Joe Smith and Noah Schutte also picked off passes.

"Some of those interceptions were key plays," Austinson said.

In the first quarter, Karl scored on a 14-yard pass from quarterback Jonny Mracek to put Byron up 7-0.

Fujan added a 20-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give the Bears a 14-0 advantage.

Cannon Falls scored before halftime to make it 14-7 at the break.

In third quarter, Mracek threw for two more touchdowns, a 42-yard play to Wyatt Nelson and one to Karl for 66 yards to make it 27-7.

"That really set the tone for the rest of the game," Austinson said. "It quieted their fans down, it pumped us up and it made a big difference it what we were doing."

Mracek completed 14 of 25 passes for 270 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Kip Knutson caught seven passes for 111 yards.
