Last Thursday was the Section Cross Country meet at Northern Hills Golf Course in Rochester. There were 22 teams competing to try their hardest to make it to the State Meet in Northfield on Saturday, November 2nd at St. Olaf's campus. Junior Gabe Tempel placed 7th out of 141 runners with a time of 17:19.2 qualifying him to go to State! Last year at this course he had a time of 17:33.3 so Tempel continues to improve. He placed 9th the week before at The Oaks in Hayfield for the HVL Conference Championship Meet with a time of 17:40.3 winning All-Conference honors. He has a very strong work ethic and is very determined. We are all proud of him for his accomplishments and wish him all the best at the State Meet!
Senior captain, Jon Fleischmann, ended his high school cross country career strong as well finishing in 16th out of 141 runners at Sections with a time of 17:45.0, improving from last year's 19:00.2. He also placed 10th at the Conference meet right behind Tempel with a time of 17:50.1. He also was awarded All-Conference.
The other senior captain, Hannah Conroy, also had a great cross country running season. She came in with a time of 19:00.4 at Sections and 17:43.8 at the Conference Meet. Coming in first for the Hayfield Lady Vikes was eighth grader Caitlyn Severson placing in 65th out of 143 runners. She had a time of 17:56.3, almost a minute faster than the previous year at Northern Hills.
Our Hayfield foreign exchange student from Italy, Aurora Cagnizi, had a time of 24:07.6 at Sections and 22:44.8 at Conference. She was a great addition to the team this year and we will greatly miss her next season. We wish her all the best in her future!
Overall, the 2013 cross country season was a fun and memorable season. It is crazy to think that we started practice on August 12th and here we are at the end of October already. Where did the season go?!?! Everyone worked so hard each and every day of practice. I am very proud of each individual and as a team overall. The Hayfield Cross Country team represents our community well! We will definitely miss the seniors next year as well- Hannah Conroy, Sydney Schmidt, Velsi Woslager, Jon Fleischmann, and Noah Thorson. You've been great role models and good luck with your future studies!
I would also like to thank the parents for all their support. Thank you for your help at the two home meets this year. Without your help, meets wouldn't be possible. Thank you also for providing the team with snacks on meet days and hosting team dinners the night before they race. The athletes love that team bonding time.
