On Friday, November 1, the high school students and faculty lined up in front of Hayfield High School to wish Gabe Tempel good luck at the State Cross Country Meet held in Northfield, MN. The pep band also played the school song as Gabe rode by. It was a great send off for this young man.
Out of 175 runners for the Class A boys race Saturday afternoon, Tempel placed in 75th. This was his second year in a row making it to State. His time was 17:32.9. He improved his time from last year at this course by ten seconds and 46 places! During the race, Gabe looked very strong and comfortable. He drove his knees high up the hills and used the downhill to his advantage to pass runners. With memorizing the course and practicing the hills ahead of time, he used that motivation to push himself throughout the race. He was a little nervous but having this as his second time going to State, he also wanted to have fun. His goal was to beat last years' time and place and as he says, he demolished it! After the race, he was all smiles and very happy with his performance. Tempel represented his school and community well. We are all very proud of his accomplishments. Way to go Gabe!
