It was a great day for the Triton girls basketball Cobras.
They got their first win! They beat Medford 52-39 on the home court on December 19.
"It was a fun game because we played varsity girls before the varsity boys, so it was a nice night," Coach Peggy Moran said. "The girls really put on the pressure on defense and caused Medford into many turnovers. Medford did out rebound us, but the girls really played tough defense."
The stat leaders were Haley Staffon with 12 points; Piper Yankowiak, 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals; Katy Erdmann, 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals; Mckenzie Standinger, 5 points; Emily Hodgman, 3 points and 6 rebounds.
The girls lost to Rochester Lourdes on Friday at home by a score of 33-39.
"The girls played another really good game defensively," Coach Moran said. "They did a nice job on the boards, which helped us hold a lead and stay close. The difference in this game was the free throw line. We did a nice job getting ourselves to the line, but struggled with our percentage, only shooting 35% on the night."
The stat leaders were: Haley Staffon with 10 points; Piper Yankowiak, 9 points; Katy Erdmann, 5 points; Emily Hodgman, 4 points and 12 rebounds; Mateah Lamoree, 2 points; Alyssa Bond, 2 points.
The Cobras had lost to La Crescent 55-33 on December 17 on the road.
"The girls had a busy week," Coach Moran said. "All week the girls did a nice job taking care of the ball and they really picked up their defensive intensity.
"It was a nice week, too. The girls are really starting to click and work well together. I'm proud of how hard they are playing. We have a little break for Christmas, but play in a tournament at Randolph on December 27 and 28."
