Byron's newest Warrior
Dustin Davis will play football next season for Winona State

By David Richards

Dustin Davis, the senior lineman who recorded 66 tackles, 26 assisted tackles and a pair of sacks for the Byron High School football team this past season, is going to Winona State.

He signed his letter of intent on National Signing Day, Feb. 5.

"It just felt like home,," Davis said, about his college choice.

Davis will play defensive end for the Division II Warriors, joining former Byron teammate Jack Nelson, WSU's quarterback who will be a sophomore next season.

And the local ties don't end there.

Two of Davis' Byron coaches, Matt Kaderly and Roy Kratt, also played for Winona State.

"They're tickled purple," head coach John Austinson said, in reference to the Warriors' team color.

"It's kind of neat, and it makes it close enough so we can go watch him."

Davis, who stands 6-foot-5, weighs about 255 pounds, received a partial scholarship to the school with the potential to earn a full ride.

He played both offense and defense for Byron and said it will be a nice break to be able to focus on just one.

"I love playing football, meeting new people and meeting new friends," Davis said.

The soon-to-be athletic training major was a big presence for the Bears throughout his high school career, from his shoulders down to his feet.

He boasts two of the biggest feet of any football player in the country at any level, a size 21.

The Byron Review ran a story in 2012 about the subject.

"The first thing anybody says when they see them is 'Holy and then a word I can't use.' " Davis said at the time.
