Hayfield School Board High praise for resource officer

By Tara Lindquist

The Hayfield School Board approved new hires and resignations during their school board meeting on Monday, June 9.

The board unanimously voted to approve the hiring of Travis Krahn, as a high school math teacher, Megan Lynch as high school vocal music teacher and Cathy Domino as head dance team coach. They approved the resignations of John Kruger as junior varsity boys basketball coach, Chandra Gabbert as special education teacher Amanda Gafkjen as an English teacher and a one-year leave of absence for paraprofessional Denise Butler.

The contract between Dodge County Sheriff's Office and Hayfield Schools was approved to provide a School Resource Officer for two and a half days a week for the 2014-2015 school year at a cost of $11,742, which is the same cost as the last four years. "It's a real value to our school, he knows the legal side of things." Superintendent Ron Evjen said. "Beyond at that he's (Deputy Bob Morris) a quality person. He's a real asset to our school and the community if I need him to come to a football game he does and there's no extra charge to us." Board members also voiced their hope that the sheriff's office won't change the school resource officer. Stating he has great connections with all the kids. "I tried to go in and meet with him and we kept getting interrupted because of students coming in and talking to him that was great to see," school board member Lisa Bungum said. "He's proactive and he makes connections with kids," Annette Freihiedt said. "He also makes a point to get down to the Brownsdale Elementary and meet kids there."

The board also took care of some end-of-the-year loose ends they approved:

• Weighted Average Daily Membership expenditure to be used by ZED for the 2014-15 school year;

• the teacher evaluation plan beginning with 2014-15 school year.

• Health and Safety Policy;

• change in the iPad handbook;
