It was a part of the deep cuts of the recession.

Beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year, the Byron school board voted to no longer offer lifetime activity passes to the area's senior citizens, a long time tradition.

With the financial outlook of the district improving over the last few years, the board unanimously voted to reinstate the passes at its July 15 meeting, starting immediately.

"It's kind of a thank you for helping us get through the crunch," said Faith Hollasch, the board member who recommended the action.

"We always said if we could we would, so now here we are."

Since at least the 1980s, local seniors who chose to do so, could pick up a lifetime pass good for admission to Byron school plays and varsity sporting events at no charge.

The passes never expired, but did not include playoff events. They still don't.

"They are stake holders, even though they may not have children or grandchildren in the district," Hollasch said, adding that some seniors also have nice, loud voices.

"They can cheer on our kids."

Passes can be picked up at the district office, located on the campus of Byron High School, 1887 Second Ave. NW.
