Triton board chooses search firm, approves lower levy

By Larry Dobson

Triton School board members voted Monday evening to hire the search firm School Exec Connect to find a new district superintendent to replace Robert Kelly when he retires at the end of the year. The board had also considered hiring the Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA), which bid lower but had less current hiring experience. After discussion, the board decided to go with Exec Connect, which has placed 22 superintendents this year compared to four by the MSBA, and negotiate the rate.

The board also approved a resolution reducing the $350 local levy per student unit to $300, which results in a modest reduction in local property taxes next year.

In other business, the board approved:

• July 15 Regular Meeting and July 29 Study Session Minutes;

• Claims and Bills totaling $1,234,975.92;

• Schedule C Coaches and Advisors List for 2013-2014;

• Extra-Curricular Contract for Connor Henderson as Jr. High Football Coach;

• Extra-Curricular Contract for Joe Giesler as Jr. High Football Coach;

• Contract for Tammy Fate as Business Office/High School Administrative Assistant;

• Resignation for Andrew Jensen as Band Director Effective July 31, 2013;

• Resignation for Matt Beiswanger as Middle School Science Teacher Effective August 1, 2013;

• Resignation for Jenna Bearden as Elementary Teacher Effective August 6, 2013;

• Contract for Faith Nomeland as Special Education Teacher;

• Contract for Laura Johnson as 2nd Grade Teacher;

• Contract for Amanda Benner as ECSE Teacher;

• Contract for Marisa Cottrell as ECSE Teacher;

• Contract for Patty Braeger as Business Office Administrative Assistant/Accounts Payable;

• Contract for Deb Groll as Payroll Clerk/Accounts Payable/Insurance;

• Resignation of Beth Larson as Educational Assistant;

• Contract for Markus Hahn as High School and Eighth Grade Band Teacher;

• Policy updates recommended by the MSBA per current legislative changes;

• Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. for the open house celebration of the new additions;

• Designating a Triton Cobra Trap Club name so students can participate in Minnesota High School Clay Target League activities. Students currently engaging in trap shooting want to organize as a club but needed board permission to use the Triton Cobra name. The board will consider other issues relating to the activity, such as possibly making it a letter sport, etc., in the future;

• Roller Skating for Elementary Physical Education.

Kelly gave a brief report on construction progress, which is largely on schedule; a figure of $650,000 given as the cost for the Triton turf project; the new teacher workshop scheduled Friday, August 23; and the full staff workshop scheduled Tuesday, August 27.

The next board meeting is Monday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. in the High School Media Center.
