They continue to give back.

For the second consecutive year, Byron students took part in a Community Day of Service, centered around various projects and cleanup throughout the city and surrounding areas.

This year's event was held Wednesday, May 7.

"It was a huge success," said Mike Duffy, Byron High School principal. "It's one of the things I'm very proud of."

Duffy said Byron High teachers Matt Kaderly and Ryan Radke organized the Community Day of Service. Last year, just BHS students took part in the festivities, while this year, participation spread districtwide.

"The first year we did it, I think some of the students were a little uncomfortable, so there was some push back" Duffy said. "This year, there was none."

Projects included litter pick up around local churches, the city's roadways and streets, along school grounds and at Chesterwoods, Oxbow and Fisherman's Inn parks.

In addition, yard work was done at more than a dozen houses, while members of the National Honor Society took part in meal packaging.

Even staff members joined in on the effort.

"Every staff member, except the ones who were answering phones, was doing something," Duffy said.
