University of Minnesota Extension is leading a 2014 Minnesota Statewide High Tunnel Conference on March 24 and 25 at the Minneapolis Boulevard Hotel in Brooklyn Center.

High tunnels, also called hoop houses, are temporary structures that extend the growing season.

For beginners and those seeking a review, a beginning high tunnel grower workshop is offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon on March 24. The main conference begins that day at 12:45 p.m. and continues through March 25.

Keynote speaker for this year's conference is Judson Reid, senior vegetable production and high tunnel specialist from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Reid will present two different topics: high tunnel variety research at Cornell and soil nutrient management in high tunnels.

Other main conference topics include:

• life cycles and control of serious high tunnel tomato diseases

• deep winter green production

• taming the high tunnel environment

• using super-oxygenated water in tomato and strawberry high tunnel production

• biological and exclusionary pest control

• intercropping vegetable production with organic blackberry and strawberry production

• tomato production and variety updates

• advanced methods of strawberry production in high tunnel - using substrates

• spotted-wing drosophila - monitoring, control and potential damage in high tunnel

• high tunnel economics and budgets
