The Mantorville Theatre Company Presents A.R. Gurney's 'Love Letters'

By Melisa Ferris

Just in time for Valentine's Day, the Mantorville Theatre Company is pleased to present A. R. Gurney's excellent story of love and friendship, "Love Letters." A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the story follows the life-long friendship of two people over the course of their lives using the letters, cards and notes they sent to each other.

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner grew up as childhood friends. Their correspondence begins with simple birthday party thank-you notes, and grows as they mature. Each builds a distinctly different life, yet they remain tied to each other through their friendship and their letters - sometimes strongly so. On our Mantorville stage, we will follow nearly 50 years of the lives of Melissa and Andrew through their letters and correspondence.

If you look up this play on the internet, you'll find a veritable Who's Who of stage and screen playing these two roles: Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, Christopher Reeve, George Segal, Lynn Redgrave, Stockard Channing, Jane Curtin, Robert Wagner--and the star-studded list goes on. Our production features two of our favorite director/actors: Cheryl Frarck and Gordy Handeland. Join us as these two outstanding artists bring the words of Melissa and Andrew to life.

This year, we are excited to offer a Valentine's Weekend Dinner Theatre Package with Mantorville's Old School Café! For a mere $33 for dinner and the show, Old School Café's extra-special three-course menu includes a dinner salad, followed by your choice of either Chicken Cordon Bleu with Steamed Broccoli Florets and Wild Rice Medley or Blackened Salmon with Steamed Asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce and Baby Buttered Red Potatoes, and your choice of dessert-Double-Layered Chocolate Cake or Cheesecake with Caramel or Raspberry Sauce. On Sunday, the Old School Café will offer its delectable menu selections for a "Brunch Theatre" package. With advance reservations, our Sunday theatre patrons will receive brunch, beverages and theatre tickets with a discount of $3 off the total package price. Tax and non-alcoholic beverages (but not gratuity) are included with all Dinner Theatre and Brunch Theatre packages at the Old School Café! But don't wait! Reservations are required by February 12 for this extra-special Valentine's Weekend Dinner Theatre option, so please call 507-635-3663 or 507-273-0772 or 507-271-1076 to ensure your place at the table.
