Celebrate Recovery to host Cody James

By Tara Lindquist

For twenty-eight years, drugs and alcohol were an everyday part of life for Pastor Pete Boelter. For thirteen years, he admits he was full blown alcoholic. Because of addiction, his wife divorced him and he had difficult relationships with his extended family.

The breaking point came when he received a letter from his young children, ages 10, 11 and 12 at the time, saying they no longer wanted to see him. The letter explained they did not like the person he was while drinking and would no longer be a part of his life until he got help. "That was my broken place," he said.

The night he received that letter, Boelter said he hit his rock bottom. "I went in the bedroom, got on my knees and prayed," he said. "I handed my life over to God that night, I asked him for strength to get me through." He quit drinking and entered recovery programs. Two years later he felt the Lord calling him into ministry so he attended an online seminary and became a pastor. He worked at Teen Challenge in Northern Minnesota and worked with men who had addiction issues while he was attending seminary.

In 2010, Pastor Boelter took his first full-time pastor role at Living Water Assembly Church in Dodge Center. "I always knew I wanted to do some sort of program to help those with addictions but I never knew what to do, but I wanted to reach those that are broken and hurting," he explained. Then he discovered the Celebrate Recovery program created by John Baker of the Saddleback Church.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christian-based recovery program that not only helps those with drug and alcohol addiction but those with other addictions or issues as well. "We help those with smoking issues, pornography addiction, sex addiction, co-dependency issues, eating disorders, anxiety issues," he said. "It's to help those who want to help themselves be better people." Celebrate Recovery is similar to AA, in that is has twelve steps to work and is group-based. But Celebrate Recovery includes the Christian faith. "I was saved out of the addiction lifestyle," he explained. "I have a huge heart for people with addictions or any sort of problems, I have been there and now I'm here to help."

Pastor Boelter started a Celebrate Recovery program at Living Water Assembly Church in June of this year. The group meets on Saturday evenings at 6 p.m. for snacks and fellowship and starts the meeting at 6:30. They have a large group discussion on different issues and then break off into small groups; men and women are separated during small group. He points out that the recovery program is non-denominational and is open to anyone, not just members of their church.

On Saturday, October 26, Celebrate Recovery will be hosting musical and ministry guest Cody James, at 6 p.m. at 104 1st St. NW, Dodge Center.

The public is welcome to hear Cody James at 6:30 at the Living Water Church located at the Midtown Center. James will also be conducting the worship service on Sunday, October 27.

Cody James is an experienced singer/song writer who was best known for writing songs for Loretta Lynn, Pam Tillis and Mark Chestnut. James spent years being addicted to drugs and alcohol, no matter how bad life got he knew his mother would always be his rock.
